How to Talk to Someone Experiencing Homelessness

  • Respect their space and boundaries. How would you like it if someone sat next to you and overwhelmed you with personal questions about something you may be embarrassed about?

    • Ways to start a conversation:

      • Offer them food

      • Thank them for their service if their clothing or signs indicate they're a veteran

      • Ask them how they are

  • Meet them where they're at. Physically, it can create a power dynamic and be intimidating if they're sitting and you're standing looking down on them. If they're sitting, sit with them on the ground. If they're standing, stand. Meet them where they're at emotionally too. If they're happy and cheerful, joke around and be happy with them. If they're feeling down and quiet, respect that and match their energy.

  • Remember that they're human too. Truly listen to what they have to say and be mindful of your body language. Don't cringe or make faces if they have an infection or smell. Acknowledge their presence and smile at them - it may be the only positive, personal interaction they have the entire day.
